What is one of the stress points when relocating?

Question: What is one of the stress points when relocating?

Answer: Young children!

For parents with young children, moving isn’t just about getting their personal and household effects from Point A to Point B. It’s also about making sure their children don’t hurt themselves during the move.

There are no set rules on how to childproof your move, but a little bit of common sense goes a long way toward keeping your children out of harms way.

First and perhaps foremost, you’ll want to keep track of dangerous items. Keep a close eye on medications and make sure to put them in a hard-to-reach place as soon as possible. Ditto for much of the tools you’ll need to unpack: box cutters, knives, scissors, etc. If it’s sharp and/or poisonous, odds are a toddler will want to play with it. Don’t ask us why.

Cleaning supplies are another big one. It’s a given that you’ll want to do a little cleaning on moving day. Just be sure any potentially toxic liquids or cleaners be kept out of reach. Consider using milder or natural cleaning agents rather than harsh chemicals.

Other things to watch closely include (but are by no means limited to) electrical outlets, staircases, floor lamps, plants, toilets, bookshelves, and, and, and… You get the picture.

Honestly, the best way to make sure a place is childproof is to follow your kids around for 30 minutes. See what they’re attracted to and then make sure it can’t hurt them. If what they’re fascinated by isn’t in the interest of their continued survival, move it away from the action. The method isn’t foolproof, but if you want to know what sort of mischief your children are going to get into, it’s best to go straight to the source.
